The Asturian fandango is a couple dance in triple meter that lives within the Asturian traditional repertoire. It’s the northern version of the Iberian fandango, adapted to the gaita’s phrasing and the loose, unpartnered dancing of the romería.
It’s danced facing a partner, without a closed hold, with a set of figures particular to each district. It belongs to the block of festive dances, alongside the xiringüelu and the muiñeira.
In Asturian it’s also called fandangu. It isn’t an import of the southern fandango: it’s its own branch, with its own tempo and its own way of being played on the gaita.
