The **Asturian gaita** is the most representative musical instrument of
**Asturies**'s popular tradition. It belongs to the family of European
bag-and-pipe instruments, sharing traits with the Galician, Scottish or
Irish bagpipes, but with its own sonic and technical identity.

## Components

- **Blowpipe:** the reed through which air is blown into the bag.
- **Bag:** the air reservoir that keeps the sound continuous.
- **Punteru:** the melodic tube with finger holes; carries the melody line.
- **Roncón:** the drone tube that produces a single continuous low tone.

## Keys

Traditional Asturian gaitas are tuned to different keys — **B flat**,
**C**, **D** are the most widespread — each with its own implications for
timbre and repertoire.
